 The founding of Chinese Journal of Mechanical Engineering (CJME) sponsored by Chinese Mechanical Engineering Society has been for half a century. I was her faithful reader early in my college days. Afterwards, I wrote articles for her and became an author. In the 1990s, I was happy to become a member of her editorial advisory board and participate in the examining of manuscripts. Over 40-odd years, I have witnessed her steps of development. Over the past 50 years, she has consistently adhered to faithfully reflecting the academic achievements in the Chinese academic circles of mechanical engineering, reflecting the frontier development in the mechanical engineering science, and reflecting the major achievements in the development of Chinese machinery industry. She adheres to such a style of study and writing, i.e. preciseness, seriousness, truthful-ness, realism, and integration of theory with practice, thereby she has formed her own unique style and tradition, not only won high prestige in the academic circles of Chinese mechanical engineering, but also earned extensive praise in the circles of international engineering academic journals. She is worthy of becoming one of the most excellent engineering academic journals. The achievements of CJME in the 50 years development are really worthy of congratulation.
The world has entered the 21st century, and China has entered on a new development stage of building an affluent society in an all-round way. Economy is tending to globa-lization, informatization, and intellectualization. Science and technology are advancing rapidly. The manufacturing industry has entered a new era of networking, intelligent and green manufacture. China has become a regular member country of the WTO, and Chinese-manufactured products have gone worldwide. The Chinese manufacturing industry has been able to manufacture machining centers, large equipment for energy, chemical industry and petroleum drilling, carrier rockets, space-ships, super computers, etc. China has be come a "world factory" and a "great power in manufacture". However, the technical level of Chinese mechanical engineering and manufacturing industry still has a great distance from the advanced level of developed countries. The import and export of mechanical equipment has seen a great unfavorable balance of trade year after year. Some major key machines are still relying on importation. The Chinese machinery industry is just in the critical opportunity perod of realizing technical striding-over.
On the other side, thanks to the progress of science and technology, especially the information technology, materials science and technology and process technology, an unprecedented change has been produced in mechanical engineering and machine manufacturing. New concepts, technologies, processes and applications such as informatization, intelligentization, networking, mechatronics, advanced manufacturing, nano-processing and microelectro-mechanical systems are emerging in an endless stream. Mechanical engineering and machine manufacturing have had a profound change from quantity to quality in all aspects, from disciplinary connotation and technical characteristic to service range and system constitution. Mechanical engineering and machine manufacturing are just facing a new significant revolution. The development of the times and science & technology requires mechanical engineering to keep abreast of the times and to pioneer and innovate, and requires CJME to, on the basis of inheriting the tradition, create new first-rate achievements and new brilliance.
