 In 1953, under the active efforts of Chinese famous experts and scholars of the older generation in the mechanical engineering field, such as Mr. Zhuang Qianding of Tsinghua University, Chinese Journal of Mechanical Engineering (CJME) was started. In 1988, CJME (English Edition), not a repetition of the contents of CJME, was started. Up to the end of 2005, 41 volumes and over 200 issues of CJME had been published, and so had 18 volumes and over 60 issues of CJME (English Edition).
In the practice of running the journal for more than 50 years, CJME has consistently adhered to such a style of study and writing, i.e. preciseness, seriousness, truthfulness,realism and integration of theory with practice, timely reported the major scientific re search achievements in the field of Chinese mechanical engineering in aspects of basic theory and application of mechanical engineering, laid stress on the report of scientific & technological achievements and advanced experience that are comprehensive, basic, developmental and frontline in nature, closely developed along with the development of Chinese and international mechanical science and technology, and earned praise from foreign and domestic experts in the mechanical line. Now it has become one of the most authoritative academic journals in the field of Chinese engineering technology, enjoyed high prestige among vast readers and authors, and repeatedly won the highest rewards conferred to the national journals.
The development of CJME has all along obtained the energetic support of Chinese governments at all levels, China Association for Science and Technology, and National Natural Science Foundation of China, especially the full support of the sponsored department - Chinese Mechanical Engineering Society, and the undertaking department-China Machinery Industry Information Institute. In its process of development, CJME has also obtained the direction and sincere cooperation of vast experts and scholars in the field of mechanical engineering, especially the members of editorial advisory board and the directors of all previous years. In the course of development of CJME, experts and scholars in the field of mechanical engineering have had their top-level scientific research achievements published on CJME and have supported CJME by their tangible or intangible, voiced or voiceless actions. Particu-larly, on the occasion of the 50th anniversary of the founding of CJME in 2003, CJME received commemorative congratulatory letters from academician Lu Yongxiang, vice chairman of the National People's Congress, and academician Wang Buxuan, one of the originators of engineering thermophysics in our country, international famous engineering thermophysicist and thermal engineering educator, and articles specially written by a dozen academicians and dozens of experts and scholars. Their affirmation of and encouragement to CJME will become inexhaustible motive power and fountainhead of strength for the development of CJME!
Since its founding, CJME has established the guiding ideology of running a high-level academic journal, and which has been carried out constantly. Open the journals published in 50-odd years, the altitude of the academic level of the papers and the preciseness of the academic atmosphere of the scholars all imply the connotation and inside information of science, culture and opening-up, which ever and again let us sense its development, up-and-up, and flourish.
Among the papers published on CJME, there are representative works of great masters and famous experts after their gaining celebrity, and more are theses and innovative works accomplished in the process of growth of technical talents in the mechanical engineering. We can find out today the "figures" of most of the often heard and well remembered mechanical engineering experts and of the backbones fighting in the forefront of mechanical engineering. Over the past 50 years, CJME has published hundreds of papers written or jointly written by academicians of China Academy of Science and China Academy of Engineering.
From its starting, CJME has been a journal oriented to the whole world. Since our reform and opening-up, CJME has paid more attention to international exchange and has made certain achievements. International friends, especially our overseas students, often have their research results published on CJME. CJME has also established the relationship of journal exchange with more than ten countries such as America, Germany, England, France and Japan. Both CJME and CJME (English Edition) are distributed worldwide.
Over the past 50-odd years, the editorial staffs of the CJME have, from the first generation to the present, kept firmly in mind the great trust of our nation and people of all nationalities, actively plunged into the undertaking of construction of fatherland and development of the field of mechanical engineering with a lofty spirit of respecting work and a strong sense of responsibility, and reflected the brilliant achievements of China's mechanical engineering by using pen and paper, heart and blood, as well as wisdom and talent.
Knowledge transforms the world, and manufacture is the ladder of human progress and development. CJME is a long roll of chronicle of the development of mechanical engineering. In the 21st century, mechanical engineering will constantly develop and renovate, and so will CJME, thus contributing its strength to the progress of human society. We will work hard to inno vate constantly in order to cater for the development of international journals, and strive to make CJME into an international major journal possessed of national traits, state demeanor and international influence. |

Song Tianhu (宋天虎) was born on August 13, 1940. He graduated from the Mechanical Engineering Department of Tianjin University in 1963. He was Director of Harbin Welding Institute, President of Mechanical Academy of Sciences and Director of the Science, Technology and Quality Bureau of the Ministry of Machinery Industry. Now he is Vice President of China Machinery Industry Federation, Vice President and General Secretary of Chinese Mechanical Engineering Society, Vice President of China Welding Association, Professor-class Senior Engineer enjoying the State Council’s subsidy, Chief Editor of Chinese Journal of Mechanical Engineering. For years, Mr. Song has been working on scientific research and management of science and technology with significant experience in the mechanization and automation of welding process and underwater welding. With many papers published home and abroad, he won the State Technological Invention Award and the State Scientific and Technological Progress Award. His period as Vice President and General Secretary of Chinese Mechanical Engineering Society has witnessed his successful organization of the 1st International Conference on Mechanical Engineering and the Annual Conference of Chinese Mechanical Engineering Society etc, which has greatly improved the development and progress of manufacturing technology.
