Wang Xiankui, who was born in Jiangsu Zhenjiang on Feb.13, 1932, graduated from Department of Mechanical Manufacturing of Tsinghua University in 1956. He currently serves as a professor and doctoral supervisor in Department of Precision Instruments and Mechanology of Tsinghua University. His research interest focuses on Precision and Ultraprecision Machining and Automation of Manufacturing System (NC, CAPP, CAM, CIMS). He is one of the initial participants and main founders of the first CNC machine (1957) and B1-64 production line of CNC manufacturing center (1959) in China. He is also one of the main founders of the first CIMS (1987) and concurrent engineering (1994) in China.

Since 1990’s, he has assumed lots of state-of-the-art scientific and technological projects sponsored by National Ministries and Commissions as well as National Natural Science Fund, whose majority achievements arrive at leading level.

His main engineering research results include: (1) Ultraprecision abrasive tape grinding and polishing and the Floating Characteristic of Burnishing Head of Magnetic high density hard disk; (2) The Linear Micro-feed Device with High Frequency Response, Long Travel and High Accuracy; (3)Precision CNC piston machine system and on-site detection and compensation; (4) Ultraprecision grinding with diamond abrasive wheel micron and its on-site Dressing; (5) Integrated and intelligent CAD system; (6) CIMS and concurrent engineering; (7) Definition of product digitalization, distributed product design and corresponding data management and so on. He achieved one 4th National Innovation Prize, one 2nd National Technology Progress Prize, one 1st and five 2nd Provincial and Ministry Level Technology Progress Prizes. He also possesses 5 authorized innovation patents and 3 practical novel ones. Besides, he has issued 18 monographs, 10 books, published over 280 papers and cultivated over 90 Chinese and foreign graduates.

He has ever been assigned as a committeeman of the Instruction Committee for National University Mechanical Manufacturing Major.and as a committee of the Academic Committee of China Mechanical Engineering Academy, a consultant of Production Engineering Branch, the Vice-Chairman of Precision Machining and Nanotechnology Institution of CSME and the Vice-Chairman of The Chinese Universities Society of Manufacturing Automation. Moreover, he is also an editor of Chinese Journal of Mechanical Engineering, Chinese Mechanical Engineering, Manufacturing Technology and Machine Tool, Diamond and Abrasives Engineering, World Manufacturing Engineering and Market and so on. He was ever or is now a part-time professor of Tianjin University, Guangdong University of Technology, Shenzhen University, Henan University of Science and Technology, Henan Polytechnic University, Taiyuan University of Technology and so on.
