In September, 1951, the former General Administration of Publication released the Use of Punctuation Marks. Along with great changes lexigraphy and typography have undergone, punctuation marks have also undergone some changes, therefore, in March of 1990, National Language Committee of China and General Administration of Press and Publication of the People's Republic of China have promulgated the revised Use of Punctuation Marks. The standard is based on the newly-released Use of Punctuation Marks. GB/T 15834-1995 has laid down regulations on names, symbols and usages of punctuation marks, while giving great assistance in standardizing writing of Chinese characters. It is applicable to written language of Chinese, and can also be referenced by foreign-language circle and sci-tech circle.
Punctuation marks are indispensable for written language, which are used to indicate pause, tone and parts of speech as well as their effect. As a result, special attention must be paid to punctuation marks. Since contributors of sci-tech articles especially those who major in science do not pay much attention to standard usages of punctuation marks in their writing, there are many problems with their writings, of which the most common are e.g. incorrect application of comma and full stop, or full stop at each pause, or comma at all pauses, which often makes a paragraph a sentence. Hence, standard usages of punctuation marks should be enhanced in writing and editing sci-tech articles of science majors, and relevant regulations in GB/T 158341995 should be followed out strictly.
