GB/T
15835-1995
is formulated on basis of Trial Regulation on Use of Digits
in Publication promulgated in January 1, 1987, by seven
departments of central government as State Language Commission,
the former State Bureau of Publication, the former State Bureau
of Standard etc. National Bureau of Technical Supervision of
China made a suggestion in the reply to the
standard letter
[1993]390:”Since the regulation involves a lot of aspects and
all publications circulate at home and abroad with great
quantity and in a large area. It is suggested to set the
regulation as a national standard, so as to force all industries
implement it. ”
Since
Arabic numerals have simple strokes, scientific structures,
clear images and
brief groups,
they should be widely used. The objective of the standard is to
make a relatively scientific and clear division in usages of
Chinese numerals and Arabic numerals, so as to standardize
numeral usages in Chinese publications.
GB/T
15835-1995
has laid down regulations on and given examples for usages of
Chinese numerals and Arabic numerals when they appear in
publications (to indicate quantity values and number codes as
time, length, mass, area, volume etc.). Applicable to all
newspapers, general readings and specialized publications of
social science. It is also applicable to publications of natural
science and engineering technology, and detailed rules of a
special field can be laid down. However, it is not applicable to
literary books and journals as well as reprinted ancient books.
