Abstract:
Optimal Control Theory is applied to high-speed cam-follower systems
design in this paper. There are a number of important competing
characteristics that a good cam design must satisfy. A performance index
functional proposed in this paper is very effective to improve the
competing characteristics. The optimization design approach developed,
compared to current polydyne cam design, decreases the maximum contact
force, contact stress, and energy loss 19%, 10% and 17% of the polydyne
cam values, while increasing the can speed for cam-follower separation
by 6%. Significant improvements are also made in the pressure angle, cam
curvature, and the follower force.
