Abstract: A new kind of signal processing approach for real time monitoring of cutting states, the frequency band-energy method, is proposed in this paper. By use of this method, the signal characteristics of cutting states can be effectively extracted and the contradiction between the accuracy and real time nature in conventional spectrum analysis can be solved. Therefore it possesses the advantages of rapidity, accuracy, interference-free, easy to set relative threshold and wide suitability. The real time monitoring of tool wear stage, tool breakage and cutting chatter is initially realized in the microcomputer based monitoring system.
