Abstract:
The
restrained shape memory alloy (SMA) layers, as actuators, are pasted on
the surfaces of the structure. Upon heating the layers, the martensitic
residual strain will be restored, the large recovery forces are induced
so that the structure will deform. A mechanic model of a beam, the
simplified wing or blade, covered with an induced strain actuator (a SMA
layer), is presented. The mixed deformations of compression and bending
of the beam with SMA layer bonded to one surface aligned with the beam
axis are analyzed, and the analytical expressions of strains, bending
slope and defection of the beam are given. The theoretical predictions
are validated with static experiments.
