Abstract: The Al-Ti plates are used as the major structure material of airplane now. Drilling must be done before the plates are riveted to airplane. In this report some research works in the field of Al-Ti plates dry drilling by means of MMS (Minimalmengenkühl-schmierung) method performed by Institute of Cutting Technology, Technical University Hamburg-Harburg are introduced. The Al-Ti plates with different compound structures are tested by various cutting conditions such as coolant (fatty alcohol mix, oil), tool geometries (rake angle, top angle, etc. ), tool coating (uncoated and TiCN coating), feed and drilling processes (stepped drill, pre-drilling, unloading drilling) etc. The results show that the coolants used in the experiments will not affect the hole diameter, but the hole diameter will be proportional to feed when coated drillers are used. The top angle of drill will affect the hole diameter. The cutting chips of Ti plates show as continuous chips with serration. Because the chips of Ti plate scratch and rub the surface of Al plate hole, the hole diameter of Al-plates will be larger and irregular than Ti plates with normal drilling process. In general the surface quality and hole diameter of the Al plate located near the first Ti plate will be the worst and the largest. When narrow cutting edge, large feed rake angle, stepped drilling or reaming are used, the hole diameter can be limited in permitted zone.
