Abstract: A previous continuum model and corresponding numerical
solution method are extended to a multi-component solidification system.
Using the relevant simulation computer codes, the heat, mass and
momentum transfer phenomena and macrosegregation formations in a
directional solidification process of large plain carbon steel ingot are
successfully and efficiently simulated on a personal computer. The
computation results indicate that through the directional solidification
technique, high quality solidified steel ingots with less impurity
solute contents and less macrosegregation in their majority portions of
the ingot volume can be obtained.
