Abstract: The effects of external electric field on the friction
coefficient between silicon oxide and brass in various lubricants are
investigated. It is found that the friction coefficient in various
neutral aqueous solutions increases dramatically under the external
electric fields and the response rates of friction coefficient to the
applied electric field are different with the variation of the
lubricants. The solution of sodium lauryls-ulfonate presents better
properties in the voltage-controlled friction system than other
lubricant applied. However, in alkal-ine solution and acidic solution
the friction coefficient decre-ases under the application of external
electric field. The mech-anism of the friction coefficient changes under
the electric field is analyzed for different aqueous solutions.
