Abstract: The formation and distribution of quasicrystal in as-cast
Mg74Zn25Y1 alloy are investigated. On this base, the feasibility to
prepare quasicrystal reinforced low-density magnesium alloy is also
discussed. The microstructure of the as-cast Mg74Zn25Y1 alloy is
analyzed by optical microscope and SEM, composition and phases are
checked by EDS, the constituent phases are identified by XRD and
quasicrystal structure is identified by TEM. Analyzing results show that
the microstructures of the alloy consist of a-Mg, MgZn and Zn60Mg30Y10.
Five-fold icosahedral quasicrytal Zn60Mg30Y10, which appears in five
petal shape or in small pentagonal grains, is uniformly dispersed on the
matrix with less than 50 mm grain size.
