Abstract: The effects of CeF3 on the sizes and distribution of non-metallic inclusions in weld metal welded with self-shielded flux cored wire are systematically studied. The main non-metallic inclusions in weld metal are AlN and Al2O3. The results show that CeF3 can refine non-metallic inclusions and decrease the amount of large dimension inclusions. And the low temperature impact toughness is improved by adding suitable amount of CeF3 in the flux. This difference in non-metallic inclusions evolution is attributed to the inclusion floating performance during solidification of weld metal. RE can promote such floating out performance.

Key words: CeF3  Self-shielded flux cored wire  Non-metallic inclusions  Notch toughness
