Abstract: It is necessary to develop a mathematical model of fluid
coupling when the steady-state & dynamic characteristics of marine
propulsion system of CODOG configuration are carefully studied.
According to physical law of fluid coupling’s operation, a general
mathematical formula of output torque of fluid coupling is introduced
from its working principle. Made use of test curves of fluid coupling’s
torque provided by manufacture, numerical method is used to determine
coefficients in the general mathematical formula for the output torque
of fluid coupling. Neural network method is applied in order to extend
test curves from several ones to the whole plane in first quadrant. A
summary is given for the application of several methods to develop the
mathematical model of fluid coupling for modeling and simulation.
