Abstract: In order to solute the difficulties of application of cost reduction knowledge, the knowledge of cost reduction for machining product is classified and the nested relation among all kind of knowledge is expressed. A new method of knowledge representation called cost knowledge element-rule-frame (CKE-R-F) is put forward, which integrates cost element, rule and frame, and is suitable for the solution process during cost reduction. Generation rules are main parts of cost reduction knowledge. Relations among knowledge contents are represented by frame element and cost knowledge element. The knowledge base is built based on CKE-R-F, this knowledge based is used by solution procedure of cost reduction in product design process.
