Abstract: The technique of the height adjusting of the fundamental elements and the process of multi-point forming(MPF) are introduced. With the Passat 1.8T roof as an example, the 3D surface is reconstructed by applying the technique of reverse engineering, and the height of the fundamental element contacting with 3D surface of passat 1.8T roof each other is caluclated by applying CAD software of MPF on the basis of car roof 3D surface. Thereby the height data file of the fundamental elements are gained. And the height data file to CAM software of MPF are transmitted., finally through controlling the fundamental elements, the height of a serial of discrete fundamental elements arranged regularly is adjusted, the envelope of the car roof 3D surface is formed. Consequently, the certain base for applications of the technique of MPF in automobile outer panels pressing forming process is established by studying the experiment of the car roof MPF
