Abstract: Vibration control of cylindrical shell partially treated with the active laminated polyvinglidene fluoride(PVDF) constrained layer damping (ALCLD) is investigated. The electromechanically coupled equations of the system considered are derived by using Hamilton’s principle. The analytic formulae of actuating forces produced by ALCLD are obtained. The vibration control is simulated as well for a simply supported cylindrical shell partially treated with ALCLD employing velocity feedback scheme. The results show that the increasing of PVDF layer number can improve significantly the control performance since the acting forces of ALCLD are linear with the PVDF layer number. Consequently, the vibration of the shell can be suppressed well under low control voltage using ALCLD of the larger PVDF layer number. The actuating force in radial direction, which is very effective to control the transverse vibration of the shell, is induced in the case of PVDF layer bounding on the surface of shell.
