Abstract: The basic principle of
applying orthogonal electromagnetic fields to alloy melt in
order to compensate the specific gravity difference between its
components and to imitate microgravity condition, is described
in this paper. Experiments have been performed with the
monotectic Zn-Pb alloys, system whose specific gravity
difference between its components is quite large and whose
components are easy to separate. It is found that the samples
with homogeneous structure were able to be obtained when the
parameters of electromagnetic fields were properly selected.
Experiments and analyses have proved that this method is very
useful to the studies of the solidification law and the
technologies of making this kind of alloys.
