Abstract: In high speed machining of difficult-to-cut materials such as high temperature alloy, titanium alloy, stainless steel and so on, the chip deforms in pattern of shear localization which is different from continuous chip entirely. In this case, the chip deformation is concentrated in the narrow shear band and most part of the chip segment is formed under relative low strain. The basic model of cutting process is the cutting equation. Considering the critical condition of plastic instability and based on the minimum energy principle, the cutting equation for the shear localization pattern is established.

Key words: Cutting equation  High speed machining  Localized shear  Chip deformation
