SYMMETRIC
ARCUATE TOOTH TRACE
CYLINDRICAL GEARING*
Abstract: A new type of gearing, symmetric arcuate tooth trace cylindrical gears, is introduced, based on analyzing the advantages and disadvantages of helical and herringbone gears. The key problems of mismatch control and manufacture of symmetric arcuate
tooth trace gears are perfectly solved by using suitable cutter
tilt and new generating method. The machining principle is
analyzed and a mathematical model is established. The tooth
flank equation and differential geometrical parameters are also
discussed. The results show that the new type of gearing
possesses the characteristics of convenient mismatch control, smooth running, no axial force and so on. It can be predicted that symmetric arcuate tooth trace gears will be a hopeful highly durable and heavy duty gearing.
