SEGMENTATION ALGORITHM BASEDON EDGE-SEARCHING FOR MULTI-LINEAR STRUCTURED LIGHT IMAGES
2006, 20(3).
[Abstract](2326) [PDF 135KB](116)
Abstract:
Aiming at the problem that the existence of disturbances on the edges of light-stripe makes the segmentation of the light-stripes images difficult, a new segmentation algorithm based on edge-searching is presented. It firstly calculates every edge pixel’s horizontal coordinate grads to produce the corresponding grads-edge, then uses a designed length-variable 1D template to scan the light-stripes’ grads-edges. The template is able to find the disturbances with different width utilizing the distributing character of the edge disturbances. The found disturbances are eliminated finally. The algorithm not only can smoothly segment the light-stripes images, but also eliminate most disturbances on the light-stripes’ edges without damaging the light-stripes images’ 3D information. A practical example of using the proposed algorithm is given in the end. It is proved that the efficiency of the algorithm has been improved obviously by comparison.

2006, 20(3).
[Abstract](2242) [PDF 145KB](78)
Abstract:
Based on the numerical simulation analysis, structure parameters of the high pressure fuel pump and common rail as well as flow limiter are designed and the GD-1 high pressure common rail fuel injection system is self-developed. Fuel injection characteristics experiment is performed on the GD-1 system. And double-factor variance analysis is applied to investigate the influence of the rail pressure and injection pulse width on the consistency of fuel injection quantity, thus to test whether the design of structure parameters is sound accordingly. The results of experiment and test show that rail pressure and injection pulse width as well as their mutual-effect have no influence on the injection quantity consistency, which proves that the structure parameters design is successful and performance of GD-1 system is sound.

2006, 20(3).
[Abstract](2269) [PDF 209KB](744)
Abstract:
In order to get more precise bursting pressure formula of mild steel, hundreds of bursting experiments of mild steel pressure vessels such as Q235(Gr.D) and 20R(1020) are done. Based on statistical data of bursting pressure and modification of Faupel formula, a more precise modified formula is given out according to the experimental data. It is proved to be more accurate after examining other bursting pressure value presented in many references. This bursting formula is very accurate in these experiments using pressure vessels with different diameter and shell thickness. Obviously, this modified bursting formula can be used in mild steel pressure vessels with different diameter and thickness of shell.

Based on the pressure regulation circuit adopting electro-hydraulic proportional relief valve to control tension, a new type of electro-hydraulic compound control circuit with throttle control unit is presented, which can obtain optimal dynamic damping ratio through real-time altering pressure-flow gain of the throttle control unit, improve the dynamic characteristic of tension follow-up control for the tension system with high inertia loads. Moreover, the characteristic when the cable linear velocity variation causes change of tension is investigated, and a compound control strategy is proposed. The theoretical analysis and experimental results show that the electro-hydraulic compound control circuit is effective and the characteristic of the compound control strategy is satisfactory.

2006, 20(3).
[Abstract](2088) [PDF 122KB](79)
Abstract:
Weighted fusion algorithms, which can be applied in the area of multi-sensor data fusion, are advanced based on weighted least square method. A weighted fusion algorithm, in which the relationship between weight coefficients and measurement noise is established, is proposed by giving attention to the correlation of measurement noise. Then a simplified weighted fusion algorithm is deduced on the assumption that measurement noise is uncorrelated. In addition, an algorithm, which can adjust the weight coefficients in the simplified algorithm by making estimations of measurement noise from measurements, is presented. It is proved by emulation and experiment that the precision performance of the multi-sensor system based on these algorithms is better than that of the multi-sensor system based on other algorithms.
PDGI-BASED REGULAR SWEPTSURFACE EXTRACTION FROMPOINT CLOUD
2006, 20(3).
[Abstract](2194) [PDF 514KB](143)
Abstract:
A principal direction Gaussian image (PDGI)-based algorithm is proposed to extract the regular swept surface from point cloud. Firstly, the PDGI of the regular swept surface is constructed from point cloud, then the bounding box of the Gaussian sphere is uniformly partitioned into a number of small cubes (3D grids) and the PDGI points on the Gaussian sphere are associated with the corresponding 3D grids. Secondly, cluster analysis technique is used to sort out a group of 3D grids containing more PDGI points among the 3D grids. By the connected-region growing algorithm, the congregation point or the great circle is detected from the 3D grids. Thus the translational direction is determined by the congregation point and the direction of the rotational axis is determined by the great circle. In addi-tion, the positional point of the rotational axis is obtained by the intersection of all the projected normal lines of the rotational surface on the plane being perpendicular to the estimated direction of the rotational axis. Finally, a pattern search method is applied to optimize the translational direction and the rotational axis. Some experiments are used to illustrate the feasibility of the above algorithm.
METHOD FOR ADAPTIVE MESH GENERATION BASED ON GEOME-TRICAL FEATURES OF 3D SOLID
2006, 20(3).
[Abstract](2140) [PDF 411KB](84)
Abstract:
In order to provide a guidance to specify the element size dynamically during adaptive finite element mesh generation, adaptive criteria are firstly defined according to the relationships between the geometrical features and the elements of 3D solid. Various modes based on different datum geometrical elements, such as vertex, curve, surface, and so on, are then designed for genera- ting local refined mesh. With the guidance of the defined criteria, different modes are automatically selected to apply on the appropriate datum objects to program the element size in the local special areas. As a result, the control information of element size is successfully programmed covering the entire domain based on the geometrical features of 3D solid. A new algorithm based on Delaunay triangulation is then developed for generating 3D adaptive finite element mesh, in which the element size is dynamically specified to catch the geometrical features and suitable tetrahedron facets are selected to locate interior nodes continuously. As a result, adaptive mesh with good-quality elements is generated. Examples show that the proposed method can be successfully applied to adaptive finite element mesh automatic generation based on the geometrical features of 3D solid.
IMPROVED QUANTITATIVE FEEDBACK THEORY TECHNIQUE AND APPLICATION TO THREE-AXIS HYDRAULIC SIMULATOR
2006, 20(3).
[Abstract](2117) [PDF 255KB](104)
Abstract:
In order to meet tracking performance index of three-axis hydraulic simulator, based on classical quantitative feedback theory (QFT), an improved QFT technique is used to synthesize controller of low gain and bandwidth. By choosing a special nominal plant, the improved method assigns relative magnitude and phase tracking error between system uncertainty and nominal control plant. Relative tracking error induced by system uncertainty is transformed into sensitivity problem and relative tracking error induced by nominal plant forms into a region on Nichols chart. The two constraints further form into a combined bound which is fit for magnitude and phase loop shaping. Because of leaving out pre-filter of classical QFT controller structure, tracking performance is enhanced greatly. Furthermore, a cascaded two-loop control strategy is proposed to heighten control effect. The improved technique’s efficacy is validated by simulation and experiment results.
DIRECT DIGITAL DESIGN AND SIMULATION OF MESHING IN WORM-GEAR DRIVE
2006, 20(3).
[Abstract](2115) [PDF 323KB](476)
Abstract:
A direct digital design method (DDDM) of worm-gear drive is proposed. It is directly based on the simulation of manufacturing process and completely different from the conventional modeling method. The loaded tooth contact analysis (LTCA) method is analyzed, in which the advanced surface to surface searching technique is included. The influence of misalignment errors and contact deformations on contact zone and transmission error (TE) is discussed. Combined modification approach on worm tooth surface is presented. By means of DDDM and LTCA, it is very convenient to verify the effect of worm-gear drive’s modification approach. The analysis results show that, the modification in profile direction reduces the sensitivity of worm-gear drive to misalignment errors and the modification in longitudinal direction decreases the TE. Thus the optimization design of worm-gear drive can be achieved prior to the actual manufacturing process.
EXPERIMENTAL INVESTIGATION OF TIP CLEARANCE FLOW FOR AN AXIAL FLOW FAN ROTOR
2006, 20(3).
[Abstract](2114) [PDF 521KB](129)
Abstract:
The flow field in the tip region of an axial ventilation fan is investigated with a particle image velocimeter (PIV) system at the design condition. Flow fields with three different tip clearances are surveyed on three different circumferential planes, respectively. The phase-locked average method is used to investigate the generation and the development of a tip leakage vortex. The result from PIV system is compared with that from a particle dynamics anemometer(PDA) system. Both data are in good agreement and the structure of the tip leakage vortex for the rotor is illustrated. The characteristic of a leakage vortex is described in both velocity vectors and vortical contours. The unsteadiness of the leakage vortex and the position of the vortex are surveyed in detail, which interprets the discrepancy between the numerical simulation and PDA experimental results to a certain extent. The center loci of tip leakage vortex at different times and the mean center loci of the leakage vortex are displayed particularly. Finally, the trajectories of the tip leakage vortex by the experimental measurement are compared with predictions from the existing models for high speed and high-pressure compressors and turbines when appropriately interpreted. A good agreement is obtained.
VARIABLE INERTIAL DAMPER AND ITS APPLICATION IN ZERO-DRIVE GEAR HOBBING MACHINE
2006, 20(3).
[Abstract](2152) [PDF 132KB](75)
Abstract:
A variable inertial damper, whose viscous damping coefficient can be adjusted by changing the gap between inertia wheel and motor spindle, is designed in servomechanism of zero-drive hobbing machine and is directly attached on the motor spindle. The mathematical model of servo system with inertial damper is built. By using theoretical analysis and system simulation, it is demonstrated that the variable inertial damper with optimal damping coefficient and moment of inertia should lead to no resonance point in wider frequency range of exciting force. Therefore, its application in zero-drive hobbing machine makes this system not only achieve higher system stiffness to overcome load torque fluctuation, but also gain better stability.

2006, 20(3).
[Abstract](2161) [PDF 627KB](75)
Abstract:
In YCbCr colorspace, a method is proposed to reconstruct the background and extract moving objects based on the Gaussian model of chroma components. Background model is updated according to changes of chroma components. In order to eliminate the disturbance of shadow, a shadow detecting principle is proposed in YCbCr colorspace. A Kalman filter is introduced to estimate objects’ positions in the image and then the pedestrian is tracked according to its information of shape. Experiments show that the background reconstruction and updating are successful, object extraction and shadow suppression are satisfactory, and real-time and reliable tracking is realized.
AGILITY INDEXES AND APPLICATION OF PRODUCTION PLANNING
2006, 20(3).
[Abstract](2124) [PDF 99KB](89)
Abstract:
The agility of production planning is defined as two characters: synchronization and flexibility. Measurement indexes for evaluating agility are then divided into two dimensions separately. Synchronization includes two horizontal indexes: order lead time ratio and demand fulfilling rate; Two vertical indexes: instruction-reaction cycle time and resource matching rate. Flexibility includes five indexes: scope flexibility, delivery flexibility, variety flexibility, capacity buffer, inventory buffer and modification flexibility. Quantitative formulas for each measurement index are constructed. One application is discussed to illustrate the feasibility and reasonability of the indexes.

[Abstract](2150) [PDF 187KB](137)
Abstract:
A newly emerging design pattern, named as adaptable design (AD), which aims at developing products that are adaptable from design to post-life cycle, is discussed. AD consists of four main phases: product modeling, design platform, specific design and product redesign. A new process-based design data model (PDDM) is presented which is organized according to the principles of convenient knowledge extraction, data representation, layout, sharing and reuse. Based on the PDDM, a universal design platform for product family development is established, which has characters of modularity, parameter-driven, variant design, etc. The framework of the platform is also proposed as a conceptual structure and overall logical organization for generating a family of products. AD methodology is successfully applied to develop a family of tunnel boring machine (TBM) for different engineering projects, with the efficiency of our developing team being greatly increased.

Currently the engine can run at 6 kr·min–1 steadily and the power is about 68 kW/(4 kr·min–1).
PERIODIC WINDOWS OF NONLINEARGEAR SYSTEM BASED ON SYMBOLIC DYNAMICS
2006, 20(3).
[Abstract](2135) [PDF 256KB](76)
Abstract:
The periodic window is researched by means of the symbolic dynamics and formal language. Firstly, the proper sampling period is taken and the orbital points of periodic motion are obtained through Poincaré mapping. Secondly, according to the method of symbolic dynamics of one-dimensional discrete mapping, the symbolic sequence describing the periodic orbit is obtained. Finally, based on the symbolic sequence, the corresponding model of minimal finite automation is constructed and the entropy is obtained by calculating the maximal eigenvalue of Stefan matrix. The results show that the orbits in periodic windows can be strictly marked by using the method of symbolic dynamics, thus a foundation for control of switching between target orbits is provided.
NOVEL APPROACH FOR ROBOT PATH PLANNING BASED ON NUMERICAL ARTIFICIAL POTENTIAL FIELD AND GENETIC ALGORITHM
2006, 20(3).
[Abstract](2187) [PDF 228KB](142)
Abstract:
A novel approach for collision-free path planning of a multiple degree-of-freedom (DOF) articulated robot in a complex environment is proposed. Firstly, based on visual neighbor point (VNP), a numerical artificial potential field is constructed in Cartesian space, which provides the heuristic information, effective distance to the goal and the motion direction for the motion of the robot joints. Secondly, a genetic algorithm, combined with the heuristic rules, is used in joint space to determine a series of contiguous configurations piecewise from initial configuration until the goal configuration is attained. A simulation shows that the method can not only handle issues on path planning of the articulated robots in environment with complex obstacles, but also improve the efficiency and quality of path planning.
ALGORITHM FOR SPHERICITY ERROR AND THE NUMBER OF MEASURED POINTS
2006, 20(3).
[Abstract](2140) [PDF 259KB](122)
Abstract:
The data processing technique and the method determining the optimal number of measured points are studied aiming at the sphericity error measured on a coordinate measurement machine (CMM). The consummate criterion for the minimum zone of spherical surface is analyzed first, and then an approximation technique searching for the minimum sphericity error from the form data is studied. In order to obtain the minimum zone of spherical surface, the radial separation is reduced gradually by moving the center of the concentric spheres along certain directions with certain steps. Therefore the algorithm is precise and efficient. After the appropriate mathematical model for the approximation technique is created, a data processing program is developed accordingly. By processing the metrical data with the developed program, the spherical errors are evaluated when different numbers of measured points are taken from the same sample, and then the corresponding scatter diagram and fit curve for the sample are graphically represented. The optimal number of measured points is determined through regression analysis. Experiment shows that both the data processing technique and the method for determining the optimal number of measured points are effective. On average, the obtained sphericity error is 5.78 μm smaller than the least square solution, whose accuracy is increased by 8.63%; The obtained optimal number of measured points is half of the number usually measured.

NEAR-FIELD ACOUSTIC HOLOGRAPHY FOR SEMI-FREE ACOUSTIC FIELD BASED ON WAVE SUPERPOSITION APPROACH
2006, 20(3).
[Abstract](2178) [PDF 290KB](51)
Abstract:
In the semi-free acoustic field, the actual acoustic pressure at any point is composed of two parts: The direct acoustic pressure and the reflected acoustic pressure. The general acoustic holographic theories and algorithms request that there is only the direct acoustic pressure contained in the pressure at any point on the hologram surface, consequently, they cannot be used to reconstruct acoustic source and predict acoustic field directly. To take the reflected pressure into consideration, near-field acoustic holography for semi-free acoustic field based on wave superposition approach is proposed to realize the holographic reconstruction and prediction of the semi-free acoustic field, and the wave superposition approach is adopted as a holographic transform algorithm. The proposed theory and algorithm are realized and verified with a numerical example, and the drawbacks of the general theories and algorithms in the holographic reconstruction and prediction of the semi-free acoustic field are also demonstrated by this numerical example.
IMPROVED FABRICATION METHOD FOR CARBON NANOTUBE PROBE OF ATOMIC FORCE MICROSCOPY(AFM)
2006, 20(3).
[Abstract](2180) [PDF 313KB](118)
Abstract:
An improved arc discharge method is developed to fabricate carbon nanotube probe of atomic force microscopy (AFM) here. First, silicon probe and carbon nanotube are manipulated under an optical microscope by two high precision microtranslators. When silicon probe and carbon nanotube are very close, several tens voltage is applied between them. And carbon nanotube is divided and attached to the end of silicon probe, which mainly due to the arc welding function. Comparing with the arc discharge method before, the new method here needs no coat silicon probe with metal film in advance, which can greatly reduce the fabrication’s difficulty. The fabricated carbon nanotube probe shows good property of higher aspect ratio and can more accurately reflect the true topography of silicon grating than silicon probe. Under the same image drive force, carbon nanotube probe had less indentation depth on soft triblock copolymer sample than silicon probe. This showed that carbon nanotube probe has lower spring constant and less damage to the scan sample than silicon probe.
MODIFIED BOTTLENECK-BASED PROCEDURE FOR LARGE-SCALE FLOW-SHOP SCHEDULING PROBLEMS WITH BOTTLENECK
2006, 20(3).
[Abstract](2151) [PDF 139KB](79)
Abstract:
A new bottleneck-based heuristic for large-scale flow-shop scheduling problems with a bottleneck is proposed, which is simpler but more tailored than the shifting bottleneck (SB) procedure. In this algorithm, a schedule for the bottleneck machine is first constructed optimally and then the non-bottleneck machines are scheduled around the bottleneck schedule by some effective dispatching rules. Computational results show that the modified bottleneck-based procedure can achieve a tradeoff between solution quality and computational time comparing with SB procedure for medium-size problems. Furthermore it can obtain a good solution in quite short time for large-scale scheduling problems.
STRUCTURAL HEALTH MONITORING IN COMPOSITE MATERIALS USING EMBEDDED SHAPE MEMORY ALLOY(SMA) WIRE SENSORS
2006, 20(3).
[Abstract](2155) [PDF 152KB](239)
Abstract:
Shape memory alloy (SMA) materials possess completely superelasticity or pseudoelasticity above the austenite finish temperature and many unique mechanical, thermal, thermal-mechanical and electrical properties compared with other conventional materials. Many studies have reported that the superelastic and hysteresis properties of the SMA materials can absorb energies coming from external excitations or sudden impacts. In addition, due to the special electrical properties of NiTi superelastic wires, they can also be used as strain-sensing element to monitor structural health conditions. Composite laminated specimens embedded with SMA wire sensors are fabricated and detailed testing system is designed such as multi-parameters measuring for impact and weak signal processing for SMA sensor. Low velocity impact test shows that SMA wire sensors embedded in fiber-reinforced plastic (FRP) laminate can be well used to monitor impact responses, such as the location of impact damage, impact degree, and strain distribution. Experimental results and theoretical predictions reveal almost the same. Comparing with other method, a simple, economic and reliable technique method monitoring important engineering structures on line is provided.

The predicted results are in good agreement with experimental results. The findings will provide a greater insight into the overall phenomenon involved.
APPLICATION OF INTEGER CODING ACCELERATING GENETICALGORITHM IN RECTANGULAR CUTTING STOCK PROBLEM
2006, 20(3).
[Abstract](2150) [PDF 103KB](115)
Abstract:
An improved genetic algorithm and its application to resolve cutting stock problem are presented. It is common to apply simple genetic algorithm (SGA) to cutting stock problem, but the huge amount of computing of SGA is a serious problem in practical application. Accelerating genetic algorithm (AGA) based on integer coding and AGA’s detailed steps are developed to reduce the amount of computation, and a new kind of rectangular parts blank layout algorithm is designed for rectangular cutting stock problem. SGA is adopted to produce individuals within given evolution process, and the variation interval of these individuals is taken as initial domain of the next optimization process, thus shrinks searching range intensively and accelerates the evaluation process of SGA. To enhance the diversity of population and to avoid the algorithm stagnates at local optimization result, fixed number of individuals are produced randomly and replace the same number of parents in every evaluation process. According to the computational experiment, it is observed that this improved GA converges much sooner than SGA, and is able to get the balance of good result and high efficiency in the process of optimization for rectangular cutting stock problem.
SILICON NEEDLE ARRAY ON FLEXIBLE SUBSTRATE FORFLUID TRANSFER
2006, 20(3).
[Abstract](2170) [PDF 463KB](376)
Abstract:
Transdermal delivery is an attractive alternative, but it is limited by the extremely low permeability of skin. To solve this problem, a novel means—micro needle array based on micro electro-mechanical system (MEMS) technology, is provided to increase permeability of human skin with efficiency, safety and painless delivery. The fabrication method consists of a sequence of deep-reactive ion etching (DRIE), anisotropic wet etching and conformal thin film deposition. The novel technology can enable the realization of micro fabricated micro needle array on a flexible silicon substrate. The micro needle array can be mounted on non-planar surface or even on flexible objects such as a human fingers and arms. The fabricated hollow wall straight micro needles are 200 μm in length, 30 μm inner diameter, and 50 μm outer diameter with 250 μm center-to-center spacing. Flow rate test proves that the polymeric base construction is important to function of micro needles array in package. Glucose solvent tests show that surface tension is the dominant force to affect the characters of flow in micro needles channel.
RECONFIGURABLE PRODUCTION LINE MODELING AND SCHEDULING USING PETRI NETS AND GENETIC ALGORITHM
2006, 20(3).
[Abstract](2150) [PDF 223KB](317)
Abstract:
In response to the production capacity and functionality variations, a genetic algorithm (GA) embedded with deterministic timed Petri nets(DTPN) for reconfigurable production line(RPL) is proposed to solve its scheduling problem. The basic DTPN modules are presented to model the corresponding variable structures in RPL, and then the scheduling model of the whole RPL is constructed. And in the scheduling algorithm, firing sequences of the Petri nets model are used as chromosomes, thus the selection, crossover, and mutation operator do not deal with the elements in the problem space, but the elements of Petri nets model. Accordingly, all the algorithms for GA operations embedded with Petri nets model are proposed. Moreover, the new weighted single-objective optimization based on reconfiguration cost and E/T is used. The results of a DC motor RPL scheduling suggest that the presented DTPN-GA scheduling algorithm has a significant impact on RPL scheduling, and provide obvious improvements over the conventional scheduling method in practice that meets duedate, minimizes reconfiguration cost, and enhances cost effectivity.

[Abstract](2166) [PDF 248KB](85)
Abstract:
A new parameter coordination and robust optimization approach for multidisciplinary design is presented. Firstly, the constraints network model is established to support engineering change, coordination and optimization. In this model, interval boxes are adopted to describe the uncertainty of design parameters quantitatively to enhance the design robustness. Secondly, the parameter coordination method is presented to solve the constraints network model, monitor the potential conflicts due to engineering changes, and obtain the consistency solution space corresponding to the given product specifications. Finally, the robust parameter optimization model is established, and genetic arithmetic is used to obtain the robust optimization parameter. An example of bogie design is analyzed to show the scheme to be effective.
